Deep zonal winds can result from shallow driving in a giant-planet atmosphere

چکیده
A simple model shows that acceleration of Jupiter and Saturn’s multiple jets at altitudes confined near the top of the adiabatic region (e.g., at a few bars pressure) can produce jets that penetrate deeply into the molecular envelope. This result disproves the common assertion that jet acceleration near the outer margin can only produce zonal winds that are confined to these outer layers. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Deep jets on gas-giant planets
Three-dimensional numerical simulations of the atmospheric flow on giant planets using the primitive equations show that shallow thermal forcing confined to pressures near the cloud tops can produce deep zonal winds from the tropopause all the way down to the bottom of the atmosphere. These deep winds can attain speeds comparable to the zonal jet speeds within the shallow, forced layer; they ar...
متن کاملPredictions of thermal and gravitational signals of Jupiter’s deep zonal winds
NASA’s Juno spacecraft will make microwave and gravity measurements of Jupiter. These can reveal information about the composition of Jupiter’s atmosphere and about the temperature and density structure below the visible clouds, which is in balance with the structure of the zonal winds. Here we show that there exist strong physical constraints on the structure of the off-equatorial deep zonal w...
متن کاملConstraining the depth of Saturn’s zonal winds by measuring thermal and gravitational signals
Based on straightforward dynamical considerations, we show how available and upcoming measurements of Saturn’s thermal and gravitational signals can be used to constrain the depth to which its zonal winds penetrate. The dynamical considerations issue from the facts that Saturn has a strong intrinsic heat flux, rotates rapidly, and has negligible atmospheric viscosity. As a result, convective mo...
متن کاملThe Morphogenesis of Bands and Zonal Winds in the Atmospheres on the Giant Outer Planets
The atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were modeled as shallow layers of turbulent fluid overlying a smooth, spherical interior. With only the observed values of radius, rotation rate, average wind velocity, and mean layer thickness as model parameters, bands and jets spontaneously emerged from random initial conditions. The number, width, and amplitude of the jets, as well as ...
متن کاملA note on “Constraints on deep-seated zonal winds inside Jupiter and Saturn”
a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t discuss an important consideration for models of zonal winds deep within giant planets. However, the constraints they propose for the depth of the winds are based on their prescriptions for the internal structures of the magnetic field and zonal winds. The same kinematic analysis applied to other plausible configurations would produce no constraint on the d...
